Mission
To build affordable housing at no-profit through a combination of volunteer labor, 'sweat-equity' and no-interest mortgages. We act in partnership with the community as a diverse group, including individuals, partner families, faith groups, civic organizations, local schools and businesses. We reach out from Christian roots across denominational, faith, economic and racial lines to bring together people who are concerned for their neighbors. We strive to develop and empower individuals and communities through the construction of simple, decent homes.
Vision
In 2009, Habitat for Humanity of NCC built 21 homes and will continue into the foreseeable future. Building 21+ homes a year will bring our affiliate to its full potential, by becoming a "Community Builder;" further impacting the communities in which we build, while increasing our capacity to serve more families.
Achievements
Currently, we are one of the largest Habitat affiliate in the Northeast region, of over 200+ Habitat affiliates from Delaware to Maine (in terms of housing production). We have built or renovated 168 homes since 1986; more than half of which have been completed in the last five years. In 2006, we achieved our vision to become a viable 'Community Builder' by building 20 homes with 20 local families in need. We plan to complete 20+ homes this year, and every year following, to reach another 100+ families in the community.
In October, 2007, HFHNCC was the recipient of the Clarence Jordan Award, presented by Habitat for Humanity International. HFHNCC was one of only two award recipients, of over 1,700 affiliates nationwide. The Clarence Jordan Award is presented to affiliates demonstrating innovation and creativity in the accomplishment of Habitat's mission. This award was received for HFHNCC's signature "Road Show" event, where volunteers from a partnering organization frame, build and erect the entire first floor of a Habitat home in just one day. These panels are then sent to our construction sites, to support the building underway. In addition, the partnering organization makes a significant financial contribution towards HFHNCC building efforts ($50,000 from corporations, $25,000 from faith groups). Recent Road Show events include: "Build on the Square" in Jan. 2006, public build at Rodney Square announcing the More Than Houses Campaign; "House in a Box" in May 2006, public build at Tower Hill School benefiting Gulf Coast rebuilding efforts after Katrina; "Build at the Bridge" in October 2006, at the Delaware Memorial Bridge, with Delaware River & Bay Authority; and, several "Faith in Action" builds with local churches in Wilmington and on Main Street in Newark.
