Women's Build 2009 Event Kick-Off

Wilmington, Delaware, January 14, 2009: This year’s kick-off event for Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County’s annual Women's Build Day has just been announced. "Red, White and Brew: A Wine & Beer Tasting and Silent Auction" to benefit Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County Women Build projects will be held at Brantwyn Mansion at the DuPont Country Club, 600 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803, on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 from 5:00-8:30 pm. Tickets are $50.00 in advance or $55.00 at the door.

Last year, the event raised nearly $13,000 for HFHNCC’s mission of building affordable homes in partnership with local families in need of decent housing. A total of 105 items were auctioned off. In addition to the silent auction, the event featured live music, food, and wine tasting. $1 of every bottle sold was donated by the seller to Women Build. Ultimately, the event raised $12,676. Popular auction items included a penthouse stay at La Siesta in St. Maarten, a Marin Bobcat trail bike, and a Nintendo Wii.

On Wednesday, May 7th, 2008, over 30 women volunteers helped to construct five new town homes in the Wilmington area, in honor of National Women Build Week, May 4-10, sponsored by Lowe’s. Women Build is a Habitat for Humanity International program, developed through a partnership with Lowe’s, which gives women the tools to make a difference by teaching them how to build homes, and more importantly, communities. Its goal is to help women be part of the solution to poverty housing. Thousands of houses have been built by women crews around the world—more than 1,200 since Women Build’s official creation in 1998, just 10 years ago. Each year hundreds more homes are added, as affiliates, donors, and sponsors discover the impact of women volunteers and their resources.
