In Celebration of National Women Build Week

Habitat for Humanity Launches Women Build Wednesdays, Women Build Week Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County kicks off 2010 with an exciting new initiative for the construction site: Women Build Wednesdays. Each Wednesday at our Wilmington project site, women volunteers will work as a team to learn a specific homebuilding method and to celebrate the diverse talents of women in construction. From the novice to the professional every level is welcome.

Last year, Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County responded to the increased interest in women getting involved on the project sites by hosting Women Build Days. Women Build days featured daily women-only crews of 15 from construction related fields, to bank executives and more. HFHNCC has been building 100% women built and fundraised homes since 2003.  View pictures here from the build days.

Since their inception, Women Build volunteers have completed five homes: one in West Minquadale, New Castle in 2003, two on East Eleventh Street in Wilmington in 2005, and two more on East Seventh Street in Wilmington in 2007.  In 2006, the Women Build Committee created their wine tasting and silent auction event, previously titled “Red, White and Build."  To date this event has raised over $25,000 toward Women Build Projects. Because of their hard work and dedication, our Women Build Committee was recently awarded the prestigious 2008 Group of the Year Award by Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County.

National Women Build Week, sponsored by Lowes, is celebrated across the county Habitat affiliates hosting Women Builds each May. Habitat holds Women Builds for several reasons, however one of our primary tenets is to encourage women to learn basic home construction and repairs in a comfortable and supportive environment.  Our Women Build committee is made up of women from all industries; however, many of our committee members are women in the building industry who come together to work for Habitat’s mission of empowerment through homeownership.
