Five new affordable homes are being built in Wilmington’s Southbridge Community.
Groundbreaking was celebrated Thursday at Sankofa Place, right across the street from the community’s long-time institution Neighborhood House. Residents are already looking forward to moving in – they are going through home ownership education and training thanks to Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County and will be putting in dozens of hours of ‘sweat equity’ – all while balancing their professional obligations and family lives.
HHNCC CEO Kevin Smith said getting to this point has been a long time coming.
“This is a brownfield so some slight contamination is in the ground and we are working with DNREC (Delaware Department of Natural Resources) to handle that. That’s nothing new for us in Wilmington,” Smith said.
