Just a couple of years ago, much of the 900-block of Bennett Street on Wilmington’s East Side was an empty lot.
Now, the first of a dozen planned homes at Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County’s Bennett Point are ready for occupancy. Monday, three new residents accepted the keys to their new homes from Senator Chris Coons, Congresswoman Sarah McBride and Delaware State Housing Authority Director Matthew Heckles.
“It’s a continuation of our commitment to the East Side and to families, hard-working families, so they can have a simple, decent place to live but also a simple, decent community as well,” Habitat for Humanity CEO Kevin Smith said. He added that the homes are built with cutting-edge energy efficiency, with the possibility of a zero-energy bill in the future if the owner chooses to invest in solar energy.
Azianah McCrae said it was rough trying to buy a home before she found out about Habitat.
